Visiting the Jewi and Tierkidi Refugee Camps
The Jewi and Tierkidi Refugee Camps shelter 61,164 and 68,001 refugees from South Sudan. Both camps focused on providing protection and inclusion, and health and nutrition to older people and people with special needs. We were always welcomed with song and it was clear that a cohesive community gathered here. The older people were thankful for all that HelpAge had done, citing the eyecare clinics, nutrition, provision of mosquito nets, beds, COVID-19 material like masks and sanitization, freshwater, food, and nutrition but also noted they were in great need of more support. It was a joy to meet the personal care support volunteers who take care of the home-bound older people in their camps. People taking care of people, generation to generation.
