Venezuela

On June 24, 2026, two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela, killing thousands of people and injuring many more.

More than 940 aftershocks have since shaken the country, with at least seven states affected. La Guaira, a state home to over 300,000 people and one of Venezuela’s most important ports, has been hit the hardest.

The disaster has placed even greater strain on already fragile infrastructure, health services, water systems, and other essential services, making it even harder for people to get the support they need. Of the estimated 1.8 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, around 250,000 are older people who may require specialized support, particularly those living with disabilities, chronic health conditions, social isolation, and those who have lost their caregivers.

Humanitarian assistance must continue to rapidly scale up to save lives and meet growing needs. It is essential that older people are not overlooked or left behind, and that they receive the support they need to survive and recover from this devastating crisis.

How We’re Helping

HelpAge Canada and the HelpAge Global Network are responding alongside trusted local partners to support affected communities – and Canadians can help make a difference.

Our local partner in Venezuela, CADENA International, quickly deployed a team of six international search and rescue specialists to assist emergency operations and coordinate with local authorities and humanitarian organizations. At the same time, CADENA is delivering emergency assistance and conducting rapid assessments to identify the most urgent needs.

Through another local partner, Convite AC, HelpAge is also ensuring that older people are not overlooked in the response. Efforts focus on age-inclusive humanitarian assistance, helping older adults access essential food, healthcare, pensions, and other critical services.

With damaged infrastructure and disrupted access making relief efforts more challenging, the expertise and local presence of our partners are critical. Together, we are working to ensure older people receive the support they need during this emergency.
