In 1990, the United Nations designated October 1st as International Day of Older Persons – a day to celebrate older people, challenge the way we think about age, and promote the development of a world for all ages.

HelpAge Canada has teamed up with our partners throughout the HelpAge Global Network to take part in a groundbreaking three-year campaign, #OlderNotOver, to challenge stereotypes about life after 60, promoting a fuller, more authentic view of older people.

By highlighting their diverse experiences and contributions, #OlderNotOver fosters respect and empathy. We celebrate the richness of older age, showing that being older is not being over!

Older people are powerful.

Camilo, 60

Camilo, 60, from La Guajira desert in Colombia is the chief of the Mapashira community. He raises awareness of how the harsh dry season challenge the community. With agriculture at the core of their livelihood, the inability to plant crops in such conditions threatens their way of life.

By sharing their wealth of knowledge, older people like Camilo have a profound impact on their local communities.

Elpina, 62

At 62, Elpina from Kenya, has transformed her skills into a handicraft business. From bags to blankets, she creates and sells a wide range of items to support herself and her family.

By using their talents and entrepreneurship, older people like Elpina continue to challenge stereotypes and make valuable contributions to their communities.

Balram, 71

Balram, 71, is a dedicated farmer in Nepal who also mentors younger workers.

By blending the energy of youth with the wisdom of older people like Balram, a dynamic and effective workforce is created.

What’s in the way of older people’s human rights? Ageism.

According to the World Health Organization, ageism is the stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel), and discrimination (how we act) towards others based on age.

When society doesn’t see older people as valuable, competent, talented, or worthy of voice and choice, older people suffer the consequences, and everyone is getting older.

Ageism is a barrier to fundamental human rights. Join us by sharing #OlderNotOver stories to challenge the way society sees age, and take your pledge against ageism today.
