We are thrilled to share that our COO, Raza M. Mirza, Ph.D., has been awarded the 2025 Dr. Elizabeth Podnieks Award for Elder Rights in Canada — a powerful recognition of his unwavering commitment to protecting the dignity, rights, and safety of older adults.

The award was announced by the Hon. Stephanie McLean P.C., M.P., E.C.A, Secretary of State for Seniors, during the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) online event.

Raza’s work has long been a driving force in advancing elder abuse prevention, ethical care, and intergenerational connection. From his groundbreaking research to creating inclusive programs like Canada HomeShare and intergenerational classrooms at the University of Toronto, he has consistently shown us what it means to lead with courage, compassion, and innovation.

In his moving acceptance speech, Raza reminded us that elder abuse is not a distant issue — it affects families, communities, and our collective future. His personal story, rooted in the tragic loss of his grandfather, fuels his deep commitment to a world where no older adult suffers in silence.

“Older adults deserve to live in homes and communities that value them, protect their rights, and ensure their voices are heard.”

In honour of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15), we stand with Raza — and with all those working toward a more just, inclusive, and age-friendly Canada.

From our CEO, Kahir Lalji MA, CPG: “This award represents our collective responsibility to tackle abuse, neglect ageism and protect the rights of older people. HelpAge Canada is proud to support this work in partnership with CNPEA, EAPO, CanAge, ILCC and others.”

Congratulations, Raza. Your work continues to inspire us to build a future grounded in dignity, equity, and respect for all generations.
