Maria is a widow who is approximately 96 years old. She and her husband had six children, all of whom are deceased. Her spoken language is Luo,and she is Roman Catholic.
For many years Maria was a devoted homemaker who enjoyed caring for her family. She also contributed to the family income by working as a gardener.
Maria is in relatively fair health, although her vision is cloudy, she has some hearing loss, and she frequently suffers from headaches. She is glad for the paraffin which, when warmed and placed on her knees, provides some relief from her arthritis.
It is impressive that, despite her aches and pains, Maria still raises most of her own food in her kitchen garden of maize and vegetables. She also raises a few chickens, which provide her with eggs and which she can trade for other food stuffs that she is otherwise unable to afford.
Maria is a quiet, unassuming person who appreciates the assistance that she receives from others in her community. She looks forward to church and Bible study and is always glad to have a visitor stop by for a chat.
