COUNTRY: Kenya
Gaudensia is approximately 79 years old. She speaks Luo and is catholic. Gaudensia has been widowed for many years. Sadly, two of her children have passed away, and the remaining son is chronically ill. Gaudensia has played an active role in raising her five grandchildren, especially the three who were orphaned. She currently has one grandchild, Richard, living with her while he attends secondary school. In her younger years Gaudensiaworked hard to help support her family by growing sugar cane, maize, and beansand by making sisal ropes. Several years ago,she sustained a back injury when she was rammed from behind by a cow. She still suffers back pain as a result. She also hashearing loss, eye pain, arthritis, and headaches. Although Gaudensiais no longer able to work as before, she still enjoys gardening whenever she can. Despite her pain, Gaudensia maintains a loving, cheerful disposition. A devout Christian, she draws strength from her church family and enjoys singing in the choir. Although food is not plentiful, she appreciates whatever is available. Her favourite foods are fish, ugali (a type of cornmeal porridge), and vegetables.
Sponsorship for Gaudensia will assist in the regular provision of food and clothing and will help her pay for medical care. Just as importantly, she will know that someone cares.

Inflation in the countries where we work and the eroding purchasing power of sponsorship dollars make it hard to deliver a consistent level of assistance to grandparents around the world. An increase of a few dollars in your monthly contribution will help us keep benefits strong for all our seniors in the sponsorship program, including your sponsored grandparent, regardless of variations in local economies. With your support, sponsored Grandparents in HelpAge Canada programs can meet their daily needs and live secure healthy lives with dignity.
