Cataract Eye Surgery in India
Over twenty percent of the world's blind population is in India where cataracts are the leading cause of blindness.
Cataracts are easily treatable and yet nearly 12.5 million people in India are blind, often because the simple surgery is not accessible. Cataract surgery is a safe and common procedure. However, due to poverty, lack of accessible health care and other compounding factors, it is out of reach for millions of vulnerable older people in India.
HelpAge Canada has been supporting eye clinics in India since 1980. By ensuring that cataract surgery and necessary transportation is available free of charge and provided by credible and competent professionals over 35,000 surgeries have been completed.
The consequences of blindness are far reaching and for older people in India. It often costs them their independence and their ability to provide for their families. This further isolates them, prevents their access to other health services, safety and community participation. Giving the gift of sight helps to restore their dignity.
Thank you to everyone who has supported our Cataract Eye Surgery fund. This program will be coming to a close September 30th, 2021.
