Mission and History

Our Mission

Our mission is to improve the quality of life of older persons, support their independence and inclusion, and provide services and programs to relieve distress, poverty and sickness.

Our History

HelpAge Canada was founded in 1975 under the name Help the Aged (Canada) by a group of volunteers who were concerned that no charitable organization in Canada had been established represent the interests and needs of the older people in the developing world or in Canada.

For the next 30 years, the staff has tirelessly pursued the goal of a world where older people can lead dignified lives free of poverty and sickness. HelpAge Canada was one of the six original founding organizations of HelpAge International, a global network of over 80 organizations that helps millions of older people every day.

In 2010, Help the Aged (Canada) adopted its current name and look to match that of HelpAge International, and other HelpAge affiliates and partner organizations.

HelpAge Canada is a registered charitable non-profit (Registration Number 118955921 RR0001) and is non-denominational. You can read more about regulatory reporting and other financial information here.
